HAPPENINGS: BRIC Jazz Fest! In Brooklyn – October 8 – 15

Starting October 8 through the 15th, BRIC Arts will host the 2nd Annual BRIC Jazz Fest @ BRIC House Arts Media Center, 647 Fulton Street in downtown Brooklyn.

A full week of programming, much of it free, is scheduled with live performances along with a new Jazz Film Series featuring screenings of Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser, A Great Day In Harlem and much more…

The three-night jazz marathon includes performances by Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Septet, Terrace MartinDavid Murray Infinity Quartet, Marc Ribot Trio, Jose James, Lisa Fischer, Krystle Warren, Taylor McFerrin & Marcus Gilmore, Ben Allison & Think Free, Harold Lopez Nussa, Julian Lage, Lakecia Benjamin Soulsquad, Big Yuki and many more.

Oct 8th + 9th, the festival kicks off with a Jazz Film Marathon hosted by celebrated writer, filmaker and Brooklynite, Nelson George featuring an array of classic films that shed light on some of the most influential artists and historical moments in jazz. A Great Day in Harlem (1994)

In August of 1958, in front of a Harlem brownstone, first-time photographer Art Kane assembled 57 of the greatest jazz stars of all time and snapped a picture that would live forever. Narrated by Quincy Jones, Academy Award-nominated documentary examines the fascinating lives of the musicians who showed up that day to make history. Through remarkable interviews with nearly 30 jazz greats and rare, archival performance footage, A Great Day in Harlem tells the story behind the legendary photograph.

It unveils the story of his music, his life, his demise, and ultimately the fragility of great artistic genius.

Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988)

Highlighting the life of one of the most extraordinary individuals in the history of jazz by using precious film footage shot in the late 1930s of jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, this film provides a special opportunity to savor the work of this one-of-a-kind musical revolutionary.

An incredible collection of classic live performances, Jazz on a Summer’s Day captures Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Chuck Berry, Mahalia Jackson, and many others performing at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.

The genre-jumping Brooklyn Raga Massive is a platform for all lovers of Raga music, both listeners and practitioners, to feel the pulse of NYC’s live Indian Classical music scene.  At BRIC JazzFest they expand their repertoire once again with a new jazz ensemble, BRM: Raga Jazz
